Company History

Current Group Chairman George Baker is proud to have founded ‘George Baker (Shipping) Ltd’ way back in 1982.

Originally based in the Port of Ipswich, the company provided ship’s agency and Customs brokerage services.  The business soon earned a reputation as specialists in Customs clearance and established branch offices in the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe.

The removal of the European borders in 1993 meant that Customs clearance documentation was no longer required for inter-community movements.  So, in a shrinking market, it became necessary to identify new areas of development.

The ‘nineties’ was a time for investing in technology and planning for the future. An example of this was the investment in direct computer links to Customs at all major UK ports, enabling the company to provide Customs clearance services for ocean freight on a national scale.   The much predicted computer glitch disaster expected on 1st January 2000 failed to materialise and so the time was right to embrace the new and exciting opportunities that fast growing commercial use of the internet provided.

As we entered the new millennium, the warehousing services division was rapidly taking shape and by 2005 and the company had substantially reduced its reliance on outsourced cargo handling facilities.  And whilst celebrating 25 years in business in February 2007, George introduced son David into the Company as a director, initially to oversee the warehousing operation. Long serving employee Nikki Farmer also joined the board as Financial Director and Company Secretary at this time.

A move to new high profile premises at Felixstowe, incorporating new offices, warehouses and a distribution centre followed in 2009.  Daughter Sharon Binns also joined the business, occupying a senior administrative role.  One of Sharon’s earliest achievements was to oversee the application process for Customs AEO status. Thanks to Sharon this new and vitally important accreditation was achieved by George Baker (Shipping) Ltd in early 2010.

During February 2012 sister company George Baker (Transport) Ltd was incorporated. This important ‘in house’ development enabled us to provide customers with a guaranteed reliable and cost effective container delivery service.

Further development in recent years has seen George Baker (Air and Sea) Ltd incorporated and also George Baker (Europe) Ltd, leading to the formation of the George Baker Group.

The ‘George Baker’ brand continues to represents true quality and reliability. This is a genuine family owned and run business, proud of its excellent reputation. The Group seems destined to evolve and expand, but the Customs clearance service for which the company is renowned continues to be the heartbeat of the business.
